These two attached stone houses are possibly the oldest known buildings in Bendigo. No 178, Specimen Cottage was erected in 1856 forand possibly by, James Brierley, a stonemason. He also built number 180 in 1861 and according to the rate books the occupier in 1864 was listed as Maria Steel, harlot.
